Halloween Devlog - Making VtM Characters for the Game

Hello, Kindred of the hour, and Happy Halloween tonight.

Tonight I want to talk about some of our game's characters, as well as some information on what to expect for the demo.

Our game's demo will contain the entirety of Chapter One of our game's storyline, this will include the main story, and multiple side quests. As of right now, the main story scenario is done, as well as the story scenarios of most side quests. There are still things to edit, like certain choices and specific dialogue. As the writer, my main focus is currently to zero in on clan variations. (Malkavian and Nosferatu of course, are in need of the most attention to matters like this) While I can't wait to share the story, I will not reveal anything here, many things shall be revealed when you play it for yourself.

Instead, I'd love to get into discussing and explaining characters that will appear in the game. Keep in mind, while there are several portraits that have been beautifully handcrafted by our portrait artist, there is (in the first chapter alone!) around twenty characters so far. If you want to help us with character portraits, please consider helping us out on our ko-fi! I do intend to get as many characters as possible to have their artwork done.

Without further ado, lets get into the characters:

Oscar - Much like the player character, Oscar was in attendance at the music concert in Milwaukee on the night of the attack. Before the embrace, Oscar was a young and timid man, with a shy and nervous disposition. Now, after his embrace... not much has changed. He keeps himself upright with fear, and is careful around the other Kindred. Your shared struggle affords you some kinship with Oscar, and with the help of the player, Oscar can learn to be brave, or maybe you can torment him to tears. Maybe he can find love, or be made to worship, and fear, your every move. The choice is yours. While Oscar may have also been attacked, he did not suffer the same Thinbloodedness as you did, and finds himself a full blooded Kindred. Of what clan, you might ask? Well, you can help him find out.

Mors - The worst type of Autarkis - an opinionated one. Mors is an unusual Kindred who only recently moved back to Milwaukee for unknown reasons. He was an annoying thorn in the side of Prince 200 years ago, and not much has changed about that. There is clearly something going on that forces Prince Decker to keep his claws tucked in around this man, but it seems unclear what. Thanks to a fortunate happenstance, Mors is graciously willing to offer you a haven for the sunrises to come. His gothic Victorian house seems to whisper with ghosts, and shudder with some unspoken evil. Animated dolls skulk the halls, and undead servants watch listlessly in the dark. At least it beats sleeping outside. I think.

Alex - A man who seems to exist solely to serve the Masquerade. Alex keeps a very tight and tense watch on the streets of Milwaukee, and is the first to subjugate those who dare to risk letting their mask slip. His ruthlessness is only rivaled by his efficiency. Despite all of this, Alex is only a harpy in the courts of Milwaukee, and has no intention of becoming Sheriff, as he does not believe he is old enough to take higher position in court. While one may wonder how a man of such low status could be such a threat, look no further than his partner - an older Malkavian with extremely powerful Auspex that he keeps on a leash. If anything happens in the court of Milwaukee, Alex is the first to the scene, and the first to assign the punishment he believes is the most fitting.

Katie -Katie is considered Alex's left hand, the one who keeps Milwaukee in check, and despite her Malkavian alignments, seems to keep the court sane. She is a powerful Auspex user, however, due to her Clan Bane, it can be rather difficult to keep herself grounded and to keep a clear vision on reality. Despite it all, she has a bubbly personality, and is happy to be living in such modern times. While Katie may not excel on the Malkavian ability to see prophetically, she is very good at detecting stress, fear, and violence as it occurs in the moment. All of which can overwhelm her when living in a city as large as this one. And when something bothers her, Alex will go looking for the source...

Lucy - A local woman. Lucy has lived all over America but settled down in Milwaukee to live her golden years out. Lucy currently runs a soup kitchen called "Lucy's Place" in the northside of Milwaukee, where she puts her heart and soul into keeping afloat. Her kids have grown to adulthood, and so she spends most of her time running the kitchen. While most Kindred do not pay her any mind, she is a boon of information and a wealth of knowledge for people and places all over Milwaukee, and can help the player find information, as well as just find someone to talk to. Lucy is a no-nonsense type of woman, and isn't looking to have her heartstrings played with. If you can show her a calm and mature side, maybe her tune will change. Or perhaps you can show her your monstrous nature, and remind her that while not all vagrants are dangerous, some certainly are.

                                                                                                                                  ___________________

There are MANY more characters to find and meet in Orphans of Caine, but we will save them for a future devlog updates and for more reveals. Thank you so much to the overwhelming support people have given us in both comments, follows, and affection. We're so excited to share our story with everyone, and to explore what our game has to offer. When we next meet, I will be talking about information involving mechanics, UI, and gameplay.

Until next time, and have a spooky Halloween. 🎃
